A Common Lionfish (Pterois volitans) swims over a coral reef covered in orange cup corals (Tubastraea coccinea) with schools of smaller fish swimming above in the blue water.
Lionfish are strong predators of other fish, however are also the favourite food of several grouper species so are very careful of where they swim. Like most scorpionfish, the first two dorsal spines are the ones that contain venom.
