(see this users gallery) A Spotted Moray Eel (Gymnothorax moringa) with its mouth wide open, looks out from under a coral reef ledge on the Conch Wall dive site off the coast of Key Largo in Florida, USA.
This open mouth display is not a threat despite its appearance. It is necessary for the respiration of most moray eels. That being said, this is one of the more aggressively territorial of the moray eel species, and due to often sharing hole with lobsters, the most common species of moray that may bite a scuba diver.
