A female Pygmy Seahorse (Hippocampus denise) sits within a huge yellow sea fan (Muricella sp.) on the wreck of the USS Liberty in Tulamben Bay in Bali, Indonesia.
This is the smallest described sea horse in the world at a maximum size of 16mm and an average size of less than 10mm, They also display a variety of body types often defendant on the host coral - this being one of the smoother shapes seen.
This species was only described in 2003 as originally it was thought to be a juvenile phase of the more common H. bargibanti species. This was disproved when eggs were observed on several specimens. he name of Hippocampus denise was given to this new species in honor of Denise Tackett, who was the first to bring him to the attention of the scientific community.
