A juvenile Ribbon Eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita) extends itself out of its burrow with its mouth wide open displaying the large fan shaped nostrils and chin barbels. Image taken on the reef surrounding the island of Nusa Penida in Bali, Indonesia.
Ribbon Eels go through various gender stages distinguished by color. The juvenile form display a black phase with a yellow stripe on trhe dorsal as shown here. As they mature, the eel changes into a male dark blue form at about 60 cms and the to the female pale blue to totally yellow phase at about 85cms.
