A very large Variable Thorny Oyster (Spondylus varians) embedded into a coral reef head on the Davies Reef system in the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Townsville in Queensland, Australia.
A very common thorny oyster in southern tropical waters, they are light and water sentive and will generally react by closing their shell when either condition changes significantly.
