A small Sardine Bait ball splits in half while under attack from dolphins and Cape Gannet. This bait ball is made up primarily of Red-Eye Sardine (Etrumeus sadina) with some Natal Sardines (Sardinops sagax ) mixed in. These baitballs are formed as a defensive tactic against the predators on the Sardine Run, but unfortunately is not very effective against the mass of predators with only the rare sardine escaping a serious attack.
Each year, starting as early as June and lasting through August, millions of tons of sardines migrate up the east coast of South Africa.
