A view of the Umzimvubu River mouth where it connects into the Indian Ocean at Port St Johns in the Transkei / Wild Coast region of South Africa.
The Umzimvubu has carved its way through the ancient rocks surrounding Port St Johns, leaving two towering 300 meter ramparts on either side. This image is taken from the end of the airfield on top of one of these ramparts.
The river was deep enough in 1905 to be considered one of the best harbours in Southern Africa but the silting of the river mouth has proved insurmountable.
