A Trumpetfish (Aulostomus maculatus) swims vertically amongst a large colony of Sea Rod.
This vertical position serves several purposes. As a defensive position it allows the fish to hide inamongst sea rods and other corals as shown here, and it can also be used to allow for an ambush attack in certain circumstances. As an offensive tactic it is thought to also allow a better view of its prey, which tend to be smaller marine creatures that live on coral reefs.
