An active Trumpetfish (Aulostomus maculatus) hunts across a coral reef on the Boynton Ledges dive site off the coast of Boynton Beach in Florida, USA.
This vertical position serves several purposes. As a defensive position it allows the fish to hide inamongst sea rods and other corals, which can also allow for an ambush attack in certain circumstances. As an offensive tactic it is thought to also allow a better view of its prey, which tend to be smaller marine creatures that live on coral reefs.
