A very large Maculata Spearing Mantis Shrimp (Lysiosquillina maculata) moving across the ocean floor at night. This speciman was well over a foot (30cms) long. These predatory shrimp are known for their aggression and for the possession of massive hooked spears which are used for attacking prey.
While not known to aggessively attack scuba divers unless cornered, it is still good to be wary of any creature with this amount of offensive weaponry.
Image taken in the sand near a shallow coral reef on a shore dive off of Kata Beach off the coast of Phuket, Thailand in the Andaman Sea.
