An adult Spotted Moray Eel (Gymnothorax moringa) wide a wide open mouth peers out from under a coral reef ledge on the Boynton Ledges dive site off the coast of Boynton Ledges in Florida, USA.
The open and closing of the mouth is not a threat despite its appearance. It is necessary for the respiration of most moray eels. That being said, this is one of the more aggressively territorial of the moray eel species, and due to often sharing hole with lobsters, the most common species of moray that may bite a scuba diver.
