The featured animal at Florida's Monkey Jungle zoo, this image shows a Java Macaque ( Macaca fascicularis) walking across a rope bridge which is part of their habitat.
All of the Monkey Jungle Java Macaque's are the descendants of six monkeys released into the zoo in 1933.
Macaques are enormously successful as intelligent, omnivorous generalists. In addition to eating fruits, flowers, insects and eggs. Javas also swim and dive for shrimp and crayfish, and this image shows a rather wet and bedraggled individual who has just finished a swim in one of several water holes provided for the monkeys in their habitat.
They live in groups throughout southeast Asia which generally contain several adults of both sexes and young with clearly defined pecking orders or dominance hierarchies
