The featured animal at Florida's Monkey Jungle zoo, this is one of the large group of over 100 Java Macaque ( Macaca fascicularis) that roam the facility. All of the Monkey Jungle Java Macaque's are the descendants of six monkeys released into the zoo in 1933.
Macaques are enormously successful as intelligent, omnivorous generalists. In addition to eating fruits, flowers, insects and eggs. Javas also swim and dive for shrimp and crayfish, and this image shows a rather wet and bedraggled individual who has just finished a swim in one of several water holes provided for the monkeys in their habitat.
They live in groups throughout southeast Asia which generally contain several adults of both sexes and young with clearly defined pecking orders or dominance hierarchies
