A beautifully colored purple, orange and red Christmas Tree Worm (Spirobranchus giganteus) perched on top of a coral reef head on the Davis Reef system off the coast of Key Largo and Islamorada in Florida. In this image, the body of the worm is clearly displayed under the spectacular and colorful gills.
These marine worms are common world wide on hard coral reef heads, and are thought to be the same species despite local variations in color of the prominent feeding and breathing gills.
