A branch of Branching Fire Coral (Millepora alcicornis) on a coral reef head at the Boynton Ledges dive site off the coast of Boynton Beach in Florida.
The polyps which in appearance are like fine hair, are toxic and contact with skin will cause short, intense pain which will fade. This contact will normally cause some skin redness or a itchy rash and is best avoided when possible.
