A side view of a Mimic Filefish (Paraluteres prionurus) swimming over a coral head on large patch reef system. This side view is important as it clearly shows the extended dorsal fin, which is the main visual identifier of this species as opposed to the Black Saddled Pufferfish which is otherwise indistinguishable.
This mimic behaviour is most likley defensive as the mimiced puffer is highly poisonous, and thus predators avoid the coloration and patternation of both species.
Image taken on the Eden / Last Oasis dive site which is part of the Southern Small Detatched Reef system in far north Queensland in Australia.
Detached Reef's in this remote area are named as they are near - but not directly attached to the Great Barrier Reef system.
