(see this users gallery) During the day,a Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) rests on the ocean floor. There is a lot of nocturnal activity for these turtles during the evening and into the night, so regularly turtles are found resting during the day in prepeartion for the night time activities.
The Raine Island Nature Refuge in far North Queensland is the nesting site for the world’s largest remaining population of the vulnerable green turtle (Chelonia mydas). The green turtles which nest at Raine Island and Moulter Cay are a genetically distinct population of ancient lineage which has long been isolated from populations in other parts of the world. This can be visually seen as these turtles tend to be larger than their northern counterparts and also generally show less flamboyant coloration and patternation on their shells.
Tens of thousands of adult female green turtles come ashore each year to nest on Raine Island during the peak breeding season.
