A pair of Common Lionfish (Pterois volitans) swim over a lush, healthy coral reef while hunting in the early morning hours. Image taken on the reef that surrounds Raine Island in far north Queensland, Australia.
Raine Island is famous for the presence of a huge nesting population of Green Turtles, but also is home to a variety of other marine species.
This species is often known as the Red Firefish and occasionally as the Turkeyfish and can be found worldwide in tropical and warm temperate oceans.
