(see this users gallery) It is no clear what this is. It is possible it is an organism of some kind - perhaps a marine worm or a sea cucumber, but it is more likley to be some form of excrement form another species.

Image taken on the Black Rock dive site which is part of the Northern Great Deatched Reef system in far north Queensland in Australia.
Detached Reef's in the area are named as they are near - but not directly attached to the Great Barrier Reef system.
