A small brownish colored Spiny Waspfish (Ablabys macracanthus) blends in with the rocky dark ocean floor. These strange fish are found on the ocean floor swaying backwards and forwards with the motion of the water.
The Spiny Waspfish can be distinguished from the Cockatoo Waspfish only by counting the dorsal spine fin count, with the Spiny having 15 and the Cockatoo Waspfish 17. The Spiny is also known only from Indonesia and The Philippines while the Cockatoo Waspfish has a much wider distibution.
Image taken in the shallow waters on the muck shore dive at Basura in Anilao in the Batangas region of The Philippines.
