A Sea Pen (Virgularia sp.) growing on the ocean floor near a shallow coral reef at night. Sea Pens are specialized octocorals adpated for life in soft sand and sediment. They are comprised of two parts - an above ground part as seen here, and a below ground part which is basically a musclular peduncle which anchors the colony into the sea bottom.
This individual was seen during a night dive on the "Twin Rocks" shore dive in front of the Planet Dive resort in Anilao in the Batangas region of The Philippines.
