Occasionally the Common Lionfish (Pterois volitans) displays this very dark color form, rather than the lighter red coloration more commonly seen.
This is the most distributed of the lionfish species, found in most tropical waters worldwide. It is also known in various areas as the Red Firefish or Turkeyfish.
