One of the most widespread of the world's herons, this is a Great Egret (Ardea alba) walking in a shallow lake at the Billabong Sanctuary just outside the city of Townsville in Queensland, Australia.
The Egret can be found across much of the world, from southern Canada southward to Argentina, and in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. It's the largest egret in the Old World, and thus has garnered the name Great White Egret.
