A juvenile Ornate Ghost Pipefish (Solenostomus paradoxus) swims over a shallow coral reef.
This species is thought to descend to sea floor almost fully grown after a pelagic larval stage. Recently descended specimans have the pictured wispy fins and are transparent. The fins fill out and the body gains solid color over a few days until they appear close to other shown images of full adults.
One of the exotic and sought after photographic subjects in shallow ocean waters, very little is known about these fish.
Image taken on a shore dive on the SeaQuest Dive Resort house reef off the coast of Moalboal in Cebu, The Philippines.
